Our History

In 1985 the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Dallas opened a facility in central Collin County. The purpose was to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of women in unplanned pregnancies in the growing area of the Metroplex. Shortly thereafter the project was abandoned due to lack of funds. One woman was determined to keep it open. She realized the growth potential of the area and immediately set out to raise public awareness for the need of a facility of this kind. She succeeded and in 1986 the North Dallas Crisis Pregnancy Center was incorporated. The first full time director was hired in May of 1989. Soon the Center began to see in excess of 60 women per month for pregnancy tests and counseling. The facility, over a magic shop in downtown Plano, was cramped and a move was made to a 2,000 square foot office complex in 1992. The Center has continued to expand in its ability to meet the needs of clients. The greatest advance came in 1995 when the Crisis Pregnancy Center became a medical clinic - the first in the state of Texas - offering pregnancy confirmation examinations and ultrasounds to its patients. At that time the center changed its legal name to Crisis Pregnancy Clinic of Collin County to reflect its new services and its community outreach.

The Clinic acquired office space of 3,000 square feet for the addition of medical services. We now serve about 80 women a month for pregnancy tests and counseling. In addition about 40 women per month are given medical exams and prenatal education. In 1999 we began screening for sexually transmitted diseases. Our goal is to move women from sexual promiscuity to abstinence through STD screening and counsel. We also hired a full time educator to present abstinence as the healthy option to middle, high school and college students and to facilitate dialogue between parents and children on this most important topic. In the spring of 2000 we became “Real Options for Women” to reflect our comprehensive services to women in need. As in the early days of the work, Real Options is supported by donations and volunteer labor of men and women who want women to have real choices when they are faced with unplanned pregnancies. We are also supported by several businesses and churches.
